Corporate Giving and Employee Engagement During Economic Downturn

In recent years, corporate philanthropy programs – often a key part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – have come to the forefront of discussions about corporate performance, social impact, and employee engagement. While these programs have been on the rise for a decade, the question is whether the trend continues as the economy takes a downward turn.

During times of economic uncertainty, obstacles to launching or expanding a giving program may seem greater  than ever. Corporate budgets are being cut; teams and support resources may be shrinking; and employees are belt tightening to ride out the uncertainty. But the answer may be counterintuitive: Do not hunker down or settle into inaction but, rather, expand giving and volunteering efforts in ways that are adapted for the times.
