Why Juneteenth Matters

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865 soldiers arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas to announce the end of the war and the end of slavery. President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation officially outlawed slavery two and a half years earlier, but enforcement was slow and inconsistent in Texas due to the lack of Union troops to enforce the order.

Today, Juneteenth continues to take on an even greater significance with the Black Lives Matter movement, showing the need for continued education, reform, and racial justice.
